Roland Gatin was born in small-town Saskatchewan and raised in Winnipeg, Manitob. He moved to Salt Spring Island, BC in 1999 and began his sculpting career upon arrival. As the son of artist Adrienne Bouchard Langlois, Gatin was taught to appreciate the visual arts. He benefited from the early understanding of such basic principles as line, balance and negative space. The family also lived in France and Gatin availed himself of the many opportunities to enjoy the treasures of the finest museums in Western Europe. The work of Michelangelo made a lasting impression on him.

Largely through self-directed study of the early masters as well of modern innovators such as Rodin, Archipenko and Moore, Gatin expanded his sculptural range. His work reflects human sensuality, geometric simplicity/complexity, and curvilinear elements without conforming exclusively to any particular style. He strives rather to explore idioms ranging from a type of classical realism to a more stylized cubism, often incorporating contrasting elements in the same piece.

Gatin works primarily with soapstone though he often incorporates such stones as pyrophillite, alabaster and chlorite. In 2002 he developed a process he refers to as 'multistone' which involves a complex technique for building intricately laminated stone pieces. He plans the flow of colours and line to enhance the sculpture for which the stone is created. His meticulous eye and hand control have resulted in unique and exciting sculptures for which he is developing a strong local and international following.
