George Smith was born in Mid Calder, Midlothian 1870, and died in Edinburgh in 1934. We was a painter of landscapes and animal subjects, especially scenes involving working horses. Educated at George Watson’s College, studied art at Board of Manufacturers School, Edinburgh and Antwerp under Verlat. His paintings had charm, capturing the spirit of the heavy horses as they worked on farms and under dappled sunlight.
