Ernest Caven Atkins was born in London, Ontario in 1907. He studied in Chicago at Meyer Both Commercial Art School, in 1924. The years 1925-28 were spent studying under L.L. FitzGerald, C. Keith Gebhardt and George Overton at Winnipeg School of Art. Caven taught at that school and also at University of Toronto, Toronto Technical School, Upper Canada College, and Queen's University until 1945. He also worked for Brigdens Ltd and was employed as an industrial designer by Ford Motor Company in Detroit from 1955-72. He traveled and painted across Canada and the U.S. later residing in Birmingham, Michigan.
