Berthe was born at Aberdeen, Scotland. She is the sister of Alice and Gertrude Des Clayes, who are also painters. She studied at the Herkomer School, Bushey, and at the Academie Julian, Paris, but was mainly self- taught. Berthe came to Canada first in 1912 and lived in Montreal.
