Barrington Watson was born in Lucea, Jamaica, in 1931. He was educated in Kingston College. He attended the London School of Painting and Graphic Art, the Royal College of Art, London; the Rijks Academie, Amsterdam; the Academie de la Grande Chaumier, Paris; the Academie de Belle Arti, Rome, and the Academie de las Bellas Artes, Madrid. He has exhibited widely in Jamaica and abroad, and has received many awards and honours, including a Special Award at the First Barcelona International Exhibition in 1967, a Fullbright Professorship in 1971, and a Gold Medal in the 1974 Jamaica Festival Exhibition. Barrington Watson has also had a distinguished teaching career in England, the United States and Jamaica. He was Director of the Jamaica School of Art from 1962 until 1966. He is represented in major collections throughout the world.
