A.C. Leighton came to Canada from Britain in 1925 and worked as chief commercial artist for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. In 1929 he was made Director of Calgary's New Art Institute. He painted scenic views of Canada and especially the Rocky Mountains. He also produced models and paintings of trains and steamships, and designed promotional brochures. He was co-founder of the Alberta Society of Artists and established a summer art school which eventually became incorporated into the Banff School of Fine Arts.
