Adrian Dingle was born in Wales in 1911 and came to Canada at the age of three. During the 1930s, he worked as a commercial artist to supplement his income. He co-founded the publishing company, Hillborough Studio, in 1941. From 1941–1947, he authored the comic book series ‘Nelvana of the Northern Lights’. Nelvana was the first Canadian superhero comic character who debuted four months before Wonder Woman. Other comic book characters created by Dingle include the ‘Penguin’ and ‘Nils Grant, Private Investigator’.
When the Canadian comics industry floundered in the late 1940s, Dingle turned to book and magazine illustration. Later in life he concentrated on a fine art career and became well-known as a painter of landscape. Dingle was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy (Associate–1948, Member–1968) and a member of the Ontario Society of Artists (1961).
