Wilf Sampson was born in Hazelton British Columbia in 1957. A member of the Gitskan Nation. A self-taught artist, he has been carving wood since 1981. Sampson completed Advanced Studies in carving at the Gitanmaax School of Northwest Indian Design ('Ksan) from 1983 to 1984. He was instructed by Earl Muldon, Ken Mowatt, Vernon Stevens and the late Walter Harris.
Major projects from the past include carving an 8-foot pole for the Houston Museum in Houston, British Columbia and a wolf mask for the Glenbow Museum in Calgary during the Olympic Exhibition there in 1988. While Wilf is widely known for his wood carving, he also produces original paintings.
