Irene Hoffar Reid

Born in Vancouver, B.C.,
she studied at the Vancouver
School of Art under F.H. Varley (one of the founding menbers of the group of seven),
and C.H. Scott (1925-29) and took post graduate studies at the School
(1930-31) before travelling to England where she studied at the Royal
Academy Schools of Painting and Sculpture, London, under Monnington and
Russell (1930-31). Returning to Canada she opened a studio where she did
portraits, landscape paintings, murals and decorative panels. She joined the
staff of the Vancouver School of Art as instructor
in drawing and painting (1933-37). In her portraits one can see the influence
of F.H. Varley. She
was active with the B.C. Society of Artists (1940-67)
and was president (1965-67); and the Canadian Group of Painters (1959-67),
President (1958,
1960, 1966-67). Her awards are many including: Beatrice Stone Medal
for Black & White Drawing at the B.C. Artists Annual (1940); Canadian
Centennial
Medal awarded for her services rendered to Canada in the arts. Her
solo shows include: Avalles Gallery, Van. (1970); New Westminster Public
Library
(1971); Unitarian Church, Van. (1969); Community Arts Council of
North Vancouver (1973). She is represented in the Vancouver Art Gallery, and in many
private collections throughout the world. Her work has been exhibited, in group
exhibitions in Canada at London, Windsor, Hamilton, Toronto, Montreal,
Victoria, Vancouver and in the U.S.A.
